Humanities & the Expressive Arts workshop

Your homework assignment is two fold.

Start with a poem plucked from an article.

First you need to come up with a poem using an article on a topic that interests you. Once you've located the article you want to use make a xerox copy (or print it out if you found it online). Circle the words in the article you find interesting. Using a black marker, block out the rest of the words to reveal your poem. If needed cut up and rearrange the remaining words to finish the poem. Your poem might end up looking something like this.

Find, save and digitally manipulate an image

Okay, now you need to find an image that somehow relates to the poem you just wrote/edited. I might want to use an image of 'mounted police' for the example poem. If I happened to have one on hand and access to a scanner I could scan it, but this is highly unlikely, so... I'm going to find one on the internet. There are several good image search engines I could use.

Once you've selected the image you want to (ab)use, you need to save it to the computer you are working on. To do this position the pointer on top of the image and click the right mouse button to bring up the menu. Move down to "Save Image As" or "Save Picture As" and click the left mouse button. Save the new image as a file on your computer. Be sure to save it in a place where you will be able to find it. I suggest creating a folder in the My Documents section (or on the desktop for Mac users) name it something logical. Mac Users: Position the pointer on top of the image and hold down the mouse for several seconds. Holding the mouse button down, move down the menu to "Save Image As" and release the mouse button. (You can practice with the image below if you like.)

Now you have an image to work with you'll need to open an image editing program (such as PAINT or Photoshop) to manipulate it with. Open the image you just stole from the web. Immediately choose the Save As option. Rename the image so that you now have 2 copies of the same image with different names. This will give you a back up copy in case you accidentally do something stupid. Play around with the tools, see what you can do with them. Whenever you make significant changes you like choose the Save As option from the File menu and progressively add a number to the end. (For example, I've named my picture of the mounted police mp.jpg the first manipulated image would be named mp11.jpg the second... mp12.jpg the third... mp13.jpg and so on... (Starting at 11 will help us when we convert them to animations, which we will do together in class on Thursday. Also save your files as .jpg or .gif as they will be easier to work with.)

There are a couple of different strategies you could take when approaching the manipulation of your images. One way would be to progressively add changes to your image.

You could also add 'jumpy' alterations, such as changing the colors of things, thus creating a flashing effect.

Another strategy would be to do 10 completely different changes. (Of course you are not limited to 10, 10 is the MINIMUM number of alterations you need to make.) This would create a more jarring effect, like the animation at the begin of the movie we watched on Dada.

Good luck, and have fun.
